“Water Wars" in Brazil
 The poorest region of Brasil faces risk of hunger caused by worst drought in 30 years

The northeast of Brasil is suffering a severe drought that has ruined harvests, worsened misery in the poorest region of the country en converted fields in a deserted and wretched landscape.


A state of emergency has been declared in a total of 800 municipalities, after the Government added 25 new cities in the

state of Paraíba to the list last friday.

Local media have reported the drought is triggering fighting in rural areas. According to the O Globo newspaper an average of one person a day is being killed in “water wars” in rural areas, while scores of animals are wasting away before perishing.


In the state of Bahía 2,7 million people have been affected by the absence of rain. The drought is also affecting people in the states of Ceará and Río Grande do Norte. Local governments have been forced to contract water trucks to supply water to the worst-hit urban centers.
